FRESNO, Calif. – After six months of organizing and voting in a union election, broadband technicians at unWired Broadband have won recognition for their union, represented by the Communications Workers of America (CWA). UnWired technicians voted overwhelmingly in favor of their union in an election overseen by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) in June. The workers remained resolute in the face of all challenges and have earned recognition of their right to bargain collectively for a union contract.
The NLRB certified the union election victory on October 3, and union bargaining committee members are now in discussions with management to begin negotiations in mid-November.
“This victory is about respect, fairness, and a shared commitment to building a better workplace,” said Elaine Savaiki, president of CWA Local 9333. “UnWired employees stood together for their rights — and now, we’re ready to bargain for the fair pay, healthcare, job security, and dignity every worker deserves.”
“We’ve worked hard to get here, and this win proves that our voices matter,” said Aaron Lean, an unWired installer from Fresno, Calif. “We’re not just employees — we’re the ones who keep unWired running every day, and now we finally have a seat at the table.”
“Congratulations! I am proud of the workers at unWired Broadband for winning their election at the National Labor Relations Board and compelling the employer to collectively bargain — for standing up for fairness, respect, and one another,” said Senator Anna M. Caballero (D-Merced). “Even when fear and pressure surrounded them, they stood strong together and proved that unity is the greatest power we have. Their victory speaks to the spirit of the Valley — people who lift each other, fight for justice, and never lose faith in what is right. I stand with them in full solidarity.”
CWA Local 9333 represents installation technicians, safety technicians, and more at unWired who install and maintain fixed wireless internet service for underserved and rural communities across California. UnWired workers organized their union to improve safety on the job and address unjust firings and favoritism. They have rallied support from local elected officials and community members in their campaign for a union voice. CWA looks forward to expanding relationships with workers throughout the company.
