SACRAMENTO, Calif. —
Access to telephone landline services could be in jeopardy for some Californians, depending on the results of an upcoming California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) decision.
Currently, AT&T is required to provide the service, as the state’s “Carrier of Last Resort.” A COLR is a provider that offers basic telephone service to any customer in a specified area. AT&T is the designated COLR in many parts of California and is the largest in the state.
The company has submitted an application to the CPUC trying to end that obligation. The CPUC says if the application is approved, no company would be required to provide basic service in those areas. But the CPUC said it’s possible another carrier would volunteer to do so.
If approved, this could affect parts of Sacramento, El Dorado and San Joaquin counties.
The CPUC is holding a series of public forums starting next week for customers to give their input.
